EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to the mid-1850s, where a group of ladies are engrossed in their sewing projects. The image showcases the intricacies and artistry of Victorian-era fashion, with each woman wearing an open-bodiced dress, some adorned with revers (detachable collars), and chemisettes. The dresses display various styles, including pagoda sleeves, which flare out at the shoulders and narrow towards the wrist, and engageantes, which are short, fitted sleeves that attach to the bodice with buttons or hooks. The ladies are intently focused on their needlework, with one woman holding a lamp to illuminate her work. The dresses are adorned with intricate lace and delicate broderie anglaise, adding an elegant touch to the overall appearance. The open bodices are often worn with volans, which are thin, sheer fabric overlays that add an air of sophistication and mystery. The fashion of the 1850s was characterized by vertical stripes, which can be seen in some of the dresses, as well as the use of lace caps to complete the look. The caps, which are often adorned with ribbons and lace, were an essential accessory for Victorian women, adding a feminine touch to their outfits. This photograph print offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Victorian fashion and the intricate details that went into creating these beautiful garments. The ladies' dedication to their sewing projects is a testament to the importance of fashion and self-expression during this era. The image is a must-have for anyone with an interest in costume history, fashion, or the Victorian era.
