EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts the biblical story of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, as he is unknowingly cast into a well by his jealous brothers. According to the Old Testament book of Genesis, Joseph was a favorite son of Jacob, given a beautiful coat of many colors by his father as a sign of his favoritism. Envious of Joseph's special treatment, his brothers conspired to eliminate him from their father's household. They stripped him of his coat, dipped it in goat's blood, and presented it to Jacob as evidence of Joseph's demise. In this print from Mary Evans Picture Library, we see Joseph being lowered into the well, bound and weeping, as his brothers look on with callous indifference. The desolate landscape and the ominous clouds overhead add to the sense of foreboding and despair. Joseph's story is one of the most well-known tales in the Bible, and it is filled with dramatic twists and turns. After being sold into slavery in Egypt, Joseph rises to become a powerful and influential figure in Egyptian society. He eventually reunites with his family, forgiving his brothers for their betrayal and helping to provide for their needs during a famine. This powerful image captures the moment of crisis in Joseph's story, a moment that sets in motion a series of events that ultimately lead to his redemption and the salvation of his family. It is a reminder of the complexities of human relationships and the power of forgiveness and redemption.
