John Stark: The Valiant Irish-Born General of the American Revolution This evocative portrait captures the rugged determination of John Stark, an Irish-born American Revolutionary general who played a pivotal role in securing New England's victory in the American Revolution. Born in 1728 in Castle Dungeon, County Durham, England, Stark immigrated to America as a young man and settled in New Hampshire. Stark's military career began in earnest in 1775, when he led a successful attack on the British fort at Fort Ticonderoga. Stark is perhaps best known for his leadership at the Battle of Bennington in 1777, where his small force of New England militiamen inflicted a decisive defeat on a larger British army, effectively ending British hopes of capturing New England. He passed away in 1822, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most effective and inspiring military leaders of the American Revolution.
