John Henry Brand (1823-1888), esteemed statesman and President of the Orange Free State in South Africa, is depicted in this striking photograph. Brand was born in England and arrived in the Cape Colony in 1849, eventually settling in the Orange Free State in 1852. He became a prominent figure in the region, serving as a member of the Volksraad, or legislative assembly, from 1854 to 1856. Brand's political career reached new heights when he was elected President of the Orange Free State in 1864, a position he held for a total of eight terms. During his tenure, Brand worked tirelessly to promote economic development and improve infrastructure in the region. He oversaw the construction of roads, schools, and hospitals, and implemented policies to encourage agriculture and industry. Brand was also a strong advocate for the rights of the Boer people and worked to maintain the independence of the Orange Free State. He played a key role in the resistance against British encroachment during the Second Boer War, which broke out in 1880. Despite his efforts, the Orange Free State ultimately fell to British forces in 1881. Despite the loss of the war, Brand's legacy as a respected leader and visionary for the Orange Free State endured. He continued to serve as a member of the Volksraad until his death in 1888.
