This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of John Stewart, Earl of Buchan, a Scottish soldier who rose to prominence in the French service during the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Born around 1381, Buchan was a member of the powerful Stewart dynasty, one of the most influential families in Scottish history. Despite his Scottish heritage, Buchan chose to serve in the French army, becoming a trusted advisor and commander under King Charles VI of France. His military prowess and strategic acumen were soon recognized, and in 1416, he was appointed as the Constable of France, a position of great power and responsibility. Buchan's tenure as Constable was marked by a series of military successes against the English, who were attempting to expand their territories in France. One of his most notable victories came in 1419, when he led a successful siege of the English-held town of Rouen. Despite his successes, Buchan's tenure as Constable was not without controversy. He was accused of various crimes, including embezzlement and treason, and was eventually recalled to France to answer for these allegations. However, he was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing and continued to serve the French crown until his death in 1424.
