Joan of Arc, the legendary French heroine and military leader, is depicted in this 19th century print by an unknown artist. Born in eastern France in 1412, Joan of Arc, also known as the Maid of Orléans, heard voices from the saints since her childhood, claiming that she was destined to save France from the English occupation. At the age of 17, she presented herself to the regent of France, Charles VII, and convinced him to let her lead the French army to victory. Dressed in full armor and carrying her standard, the Maid of Orléans led the French forces to several crucial victories, most notably the Siege of Orléans in 1429, which marked the turning point of the Hundred Years' War. Her leadership and military prowess earned her the respect and admiration of her soldiers and the French people. However, Joan of Arc's victories were short-lived. In 1430, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who put her on trial for heresy and cross-dressing. Despite the lack of evidence, Joan of Arc was found guilty and sentenced to be burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. Her execution shocked Europe, and she was later canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church in 1456.
