1412 1431 Heroine Joan Deruet

EDITORS COMMENTS
Joan of Arc: The Maid of Orléans, a French heroine and iconic historical figure, is depicted in this stunning 15th-century print by the renowned French artist, Jean Bourdichon, also known as Maître Jean de Paris, or Deruet. The print, created around 1480, captures the fierce determination and unwavering faith of the young woman who led the French army to victory during the Hundred Years' War. Born in Domrémy, France, in 1412, Joan of Arc was a simple peasant girl who claimed to have received divine visions from Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret, urging her to save France from the English occupation. At the age of 17, she donned men's armor and rode to the siege of Orléans, where she inspired the demoralized French troops with her courage and conviction. The print shows Joan of Arc in full battle regalia, holding a banner emblazoned with the fleur-de-lis, the symbol of the French monarchy. Her fierce expression and determined gaze convey the intensity of her belief in her mission. The print also depicts the saints who appeared to her, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret, standing behind her, offering their support. Joan of Arc's military successes continued until her capture by the Burgundians in 1430. She was later sold to the English and put on trial for heresy and cross-dressing. Despite her imprisonment, she remained unwavering in her faith, and her trial ended with her being burned at the stake in Rouen on May 30, 1431. This print is a testament to the enduring legacy of Joan of Arc as a symbol of French national pride and the power of faith and determination in the face of adversity. The intricate details of the artwork, from the folds of Joan's armor to the delicate features of the saints, demonstrate the skill and artistry of Deruet, making it a valuable historical artifact and a must-have for any collection of European art or military history.
