This print depicts Jean Le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783), a renowned French scientist, mathematician, and philosopher. Born in Paris, d'Alembert made significant contributions to various fields of mathematics, including analytic geometry, calculus, and number theory. He is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Denis Diderot on the groundbreaking Encyclopédie, an ambitious project that aimed to document all human knowledge up to that time. D'Alembert's intellectual prowess was evident from a young age. He began his studies at the Louis-le-Grand College in Paris and went on to study at the École Normale Supérieure. His mathematical abilities were recognized by the Académie des Sciences, which awarded him the prestigious Prix Flamsteed in 1741 for his work on celestial mechanics. In addition to his scientific pursuits, d'Alembert was also a philosopher and writer. He authored numerous works on philosophy, mathematics, and physics, and was a frequent contributor to the prestigious journal, the Journal des Savants.
