This powerful and poignant photograph captures the moment just before the assassination of Jean Jaurès, a towering figure in French political history. Born on September 3, 1859, Jaurès was a French socialist statesman and journalist who founded and edited the influential daily newspaper, L'Humanité. A passionate advocate for peace and social justice, Jaurès was a vocal opponent of militarism and war. On the evening of July 31, 1914, as tensions between France and Germany escalated towards war, Jaurès gathered with fellow politicians and journalists at the Café du Croissant in Paris to discuss the crisis.
