Born on March 20, 1784, in Rome, Italy, Joseph-Charles-Paul was the nephew of the legendary French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite his noble lineage, Joseph-Charles-Paul's life was marked by a series of misfortunes. After the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, his father was exiled, and the family moved to the United States, where they settled in Bordentown, New Jersey. Joseph-Charles-Paul received a decent education but struggled to find a stable career and financial security. He eventually moved to Europe, where he lived a rather obscure life, often relying on the charity of his relatives. The photograph, taken in 1891, depicts Joseph-Charles-Paul in a formal suit, with a plump, round face and a thoughtful expression. His nickname, Plon-Plon, was a term of endearment used by his family and close friends. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, despite the shadows cast by his famous surname, lived a complex and intriguing existence.
