EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the young Jean-Baptiste Lully, a French composer and court musician, in a quiet moment of contemplation and creativity in the kitchen of the royal palace. Born on November 19, 1639, in Florence, Italy, Lully was a prolific and influential figure in the world of Baroque music. By the age of 12, he had already begun his musical training, and by 1661, he had arrived in France, where he would spend the rest of his life. The kitchen setting of this photograph is significant, as Lully's career began not as a composer, but as a court musician and dance master. He would often accompany the royal family and their guests during meals, providing music to entertain and delight. In this moment, the young Lully can be seen holding a violin, his instrument of choice, and lost in thought as he contemplates the melody that will soon flow from his fingers. Lully's contributions to French music are immeasurable. He composed operas, oratorios, ballets, and instrumental music, and he established the Académie Royale de Musique et de Danse, which would become the basis for the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris. Lully's influence extended beyond music, as well. He was a trusted advisor to King Louis XIV and played a key role in the planning and execution of the king's grand entertainments. This photograph, taken in 1687, offers a rare glimpse into the life of this remarkable man as he honed his craft in the kitchen of the royal palace. It is a reminder of the humble beginnings of a man who would go on to shape the course of French music history.
