EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Jane Elizabeth Scott, born in 1757, who became the wife of the 5th Earl of Oxford and the mistress of Lord Byron when she was forty and he was only twenty-five. The image, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to the historical era of the late 18th century. Jane Scott's story is a fascinating chapter in the annals of British history. She was the eldest daughter of the 4th Earl of Ancaster and married the 5th Earl of Oxford, Thomas de Grey, in 1780, when she was just eighteen years old. Their marriage produced six children. However, the Earl's infidelities led Jane to seek solace in the arms of other men, including the young poet Lord Byron. Byron's relationship with Jane began in 1812, when he was a guest at Newstead Abbey, the ancestral home of the Earl of Oxford. Byron was captivated by Jane's beauty and intelligence, and the two began an affair that lasted several years. Byron dedicated several poems to Jane, including "She Walks in Beauty" and "To the Lady," which are believed to have been inspired by their time together. Despite the age difference and the social taboo of the affair, Jane and Byron's relationship was intense and passionate. Jane's influence on Byron's poetry and literary career is undeniable, and their connection continued even after Byron left England for Europe in 1816. This portrait of Jane Scott, taken in 1799, offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied societal norms and left an indelible mark on the literary world. Her story is a testament to the power of love and the enduring allure of the past.
