EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the renowned English actor James Quin, born in 1693, in the midst of a dramatic performance. Quin, whose full name was James Quin Sr., was a prominent figure in the London theatre scene during the early 18th century. Known for his plump figure and expressive acting, he was a favorite among audiences and critics alike. The image, produced by Mary Evans Picture Library from their extensive collection, dates back to 1766. Quin is shown in character, fully immersed in the role he is portraying, with a fierce intensity in his eyes and a determined posture. The historical setting of the print adds to the authenticity of the scene, transporting us back in time to the world of 18th-century theatre. Quin's career spanned over five decades, during which he appeared in numerous plays, both classical and contemporary. He was particularly known for his roles in tragedies, and his performances in works by Shakespeare, Dryden, and Otway were particularly acclaimed. Quin was also a respected member of the theatrical community, serving as a manager at Drury Lane Theatre and mentoring younger actors. Despite his success, Quin's personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his first wife and several children at a young age, and his second marriage was also unhappy. Nevertheless, he continued to captivate audiences with his powerful performances until his death in 1765. This print is a testament to Quin's enduring legacy as one of the greatest actors of his time, and a reminder of the rich history of the London theatre scene during the 18th century.
