EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the momentous occasion when Francis Bacon was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal by King James I in 1618. The painting, entitled "Francis Bacon Appointed Chancellor by King James I," is attributed to the French artist, Georges de La Tour, or possibly his follower, Jean-Baptiste Figuier. The scene is set in the grand surroundings of the Hall of the Knights of the Garter in Windsor Castle. King James I, dressed in his robes of state, sits regally on his throne, his eyes fixed on Bacon as he presents him with the symbols of his new office. Bacon, dressed in black, bows deeply in submission as he receives the seal and the mace from the king's hand. The other figures in the painting, including the Duke of Buckingham and the Earl of Suffolk, look on approvingly. At the time of his appointment, Bacon was a rising star in English political circles. He had already made a name for himself as a lawyer, philosopher, and statesman. However, his tenure as Chancellor was marked by controversy and scandal, including allegations of bribery and corruption. Despite these challenges, Bacon continued to serve the king faithfully until his resignation in 1621. This historic moment in British history is a testament to the complex and often tumultuous relationship between the monarchy and its advisors. The painting provides a fascinating glimpse into the political intrigues and power struggles of the early modern period, and serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of the men and women who shaped the course of history.
