"This image depicts Jules-Sébastien-César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), a renowned French naval explorer, during his illustrious career in the South Seas and Antarctica. Dumont d'Urville is best known for his voyages aboard the ships Astrolabe and Zélée, which took place between 1826 and 1840. During these expeditions, Dumont d'Urville made significant contributions to the exploration and mapping of various islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including the Marquesas, the Tuamotus, and the Kerguelen Islands. He also became the first European to reach the Antarctic Peninsula, where he named it 'Terre Adélie' in honor of his wife, Adèle.
