EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the devastating aftermath of the bombardment of Izmir, Turkey, in March 1915, during the First World War. The city, also known as Smyrna, was a major port and commercial center in the Ottoman Empire, located on the western coast of Anatolia. In early 1915, tensions between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers escalated, leading to a naval blockade of the Dardanelles Straits and the eventual invasion of Gallipoli. In response, the Ottoman Empire launched a counter-offensive, attacking the Allied-held city of Izmir. The British, fearing the loss of the strategic port, launched a bombardment of the city on March 18, 1915. The photo shows the results of this bombardment, taken just 24 hours after the attack. The once vibrant and bustling cityscape is reduced to ruins, with buildings destroyed and smoke rising from the wreckage. The Eastern Quarter, a predominantly Christian and Greek neighborhood, was particularly hard hit, as it was home to many of the city's wealthiest residents and commercial enterprises. The bombardment marked the beginning of the end for the Ottoman Empire's involvement in the First World War. The city remained under Allied control until the end of the war, and the devastation wrought by the bombardment contributed to the displacement and suffering of thousands of Turkish and Greek residents. The ruins of Izmir serve as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of war and the human cost of conflict.
