Italian Infantry on Crete

Italian Infantry on Crete. Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. In 1898, Turkish troops were ejected and a national government was set up, still nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. Prince George, was made High Commissioner, and a joint Muslim-Christian assembly was part-elected, part-appointed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in the complex history of Crete, an island that remained under Ottoman rule long after much of modern Greece had gained its independence. In 1897, a Greek force arrived with the intention of annexing the island, but their efforts were met with resistance from Turkish troops. The Great Powers intervened, occupying the island and dividing it into areas of control for Britain, France, Russia, and Italy. In 1898, Turkish troops were eventually ejected, and a national government was established under the High Commissioner, Prince George. This government was nominally still under Ottoman suzerainty. The image depicts Italian infantry soldiers, likely part of the Italian contingent of peacekeeping forces, standing outside a monastery in the village of Gonia, near the town of Chania. The peaceful scene contrasts with the turbulent history of the region at the time. The monastery, known as Colimbari, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Crete, which has been shaped by various civilizations throughout history. The Italian soldiers, with their stern expressions and military uniforms, stand as a reminder of the foreign powers that sought to control this strategic and historically significant island. This photograph offers a glimpse into a fascinating period of history, when the fate of Crete was being decided by external forces, and when the island was on the cusp of joining the modern Greek state. The peaceful scene outside the monastery serves as a reminder of the enduring power of history and culture, even in the midst of political upheaval.
