EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the fog of war, the Italian battleship Leonardo da Vinci stands proudly in the Mediterranean Sea during the early years of the First World War. Launched in 1911 as part of the Conte di Cavour class, this majestic vessel was named after the renowned Italian polymath, Leonardo da Vinci. With its distinctive angled deck and powerful guns, the Leonardo da Vinci was a formidable presence on the water. However, the tranquility of this scene was soon shattered as the Italian navy found itself engaged in the Battle of Taranto in 1916. During the nighttime assault, the Leonardo da Vinci was hit by several torpedoes and sank in the harbor. The Italian navy, determined to salvage their valuable asset, began the arduous process of refloating the battleship in 1919. The image captures the Leonardo da Vinci in its misty splendor, with the thick fog enveloping the ship and adding an ethereal quality to the scene. The smoke rising from the funnels and the calm waters create a striking contrast, highlighting the power and grace of this historic warship. Despite its eventual decommissioning in 1923, the Leonardo da Vinci remains an important part of Italy's naval history. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the battles fought and the sacrifices made during the Great War.
