These three linked ships formed a floating isolation hospital for the treatment of smallpox patients brought by river ambulance from London. During this period, smallpox was a highly contagious and deadly disease, and the Metropolitan Asylums Board (MAB) established these hospital ships to provide essential medical care and contain the spread of the illness. The Atlas, Endymion, and Castalia were specially designed and equipped to accommodate smallpox patients in isolation. The ships were linked by a bridge, allowing medical staff to move freely between them while minimizing contact with patients. The patients were transported to the ships by river ambulances, which were also specially designed to prevent the spread of the disease.
