Holwells Memorial, Kolkata, India

Holwells Memorial, Kolkata (Calcutta), India. John Zephaniah Holwell (1711-1798) was one of the few survivors of the Black Hole of Calcutta and this is a monument erected in the memory of those who suffered in the cramped confines of a tiny guard-room of the Old Fort William at the hands of the Nawab of Bengal Suraj-ud-Daulah. The original monument was replaced by a replica in 1902, which was moved to a less prominent position than that depicted here in 1940 (pre-Independence)

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Holwell's Memorial: A Tribute to the Victims of the Black Hole of Calcutta" Holwell's Memorial, located in Kolkata, India, stands as a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in the annals of colonial history. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of the approximately 123 British soldiers and European civilians who perished in the cramped confines of a tiny guard-room of the Old Fort William in 1756, at the hands of the Nawab of Bengal, Suraj-ud-Daulah. The memorial, depicted in this photograph, was erected in 1833 to honor John Zephaniah Holwell (1711-1798), one of the few survivors of the infamous incident known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. The original monument, which was located near the site of the tragedy, was replaced by a replica in 1902. However, the replica was later moved to a less prominent position in 1940, before India's independence. The Black Hole of Calcutta incident occurred during the Siege of Calcutta, which took place during the Second Anglo-Maratha War. The soldiers and civilians were imprisoned in a small, airless room, measuring only 18 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 10 feet high, leading to the tragic loss of life due to suffocation and asphyxiation. The memorial, with its intricate carvings and solemn atmosphere, serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit, as well as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history between the British East India Company and the native rulers of India. Today, it stands as a popular tourist attraction and a significant historical site, drawing visitors from all corners of the world.
