HMS Vanoc: A British V-class Destroyer at Sea during World War I and II This evocative photograph captures the HMS Vanoc, a British V-class destroyer, as it cuts through the choppy waters of the North Sea during the early 20th century. Launched in 1917, the HMS Vanoc served a distinguished career that spanned both World War I and II. During the First World War, the HMS Vanoc was primarily used for anti-submarine warfare and convoy escort duties. Armed with a main battery of four 102mm (4-inch) guns and two 457mm (18-inch) torpedo tubes, the HMS Vanoc was a formidable force against enemy submarines and surface raiders. As the threat of a second world war loomed, the HMS Vanoc was converted into a long-range escort ship. Equipped with additional anti-aircraft guns and radar systems, the HMS Vanoc was better suited to defend against aerial attacks and provide protection for merchant convoys.
