This poignant image captures the final moments of HMHS Gloucester Castle, a Union Castle steamship that served as a hospital ship during the First World War. The Red Cross emblem can be seen clearly on the side of the ship as it begins to sink off the Isle of Wight on March 31, 1917, following a German torpedo attack. The hospital ship, which had been converted from a passenger liner to provide much-needed medical support for the British military, was hit while on its way to bring wounded soldiers back to England from France. Despite the damage, the crew and medical staff on board managed to evacuate all the patients before abandoning ship. The Gloucester Castle was later salvaged and returned to civilian service, but ultimately met its end in the South Atlantic in 1942. This haunting photograph serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the resilience of those who served on the front lines and at sea.
