This engraving captures the moment of departure for Sir Henry Morton Stanley and his officers as they set sail from Mombasa, East Africa, aboard the steam-ship Katoria in 1889. Stanley, an Anglo-American explorer and journalist, led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to rescue the German doctor, explorer, and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province, Emin Pasha. Emin Pasha had retreated to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with 10,000 followers during the Mahdist Rising of the mid-1880s, and was considered lost due to the lack of communication. The British government sent out a rescue party, led by Stanley, to find and bring Emin Pasha back to civilization. In this image, Stanley is seen on the deck of the ship, waving goodbye to Mombasa as he embarks on the journey to find the missing explorer. Stanley, who was known for his determination and resourcefulness, had already made a name for himself with his famous encounter with the legendary African explorer, Dr. Livingstone, in 1871. This expedition would further solidify his reputation as a fearless and accomplished explorer."
