Tetley shire horses, Roundhay Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968. Artist: Michael Walters

Tetley shire horses, Roundhay Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes, but the Danish owners of Tetleys decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Michael Walters captures the iconic Tetley shire horses in all their majestic glory. Taken in 1968 at Roundhay Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire, this image pays homage to the incredible history of these world-famous horses. For an astonishing 184 years, they faithfully served the Tetley company since its establishment by Joshua Tetley in 1822. Initially used to pull drays for beer barrel deliveries, as modernization took over with lorries taking on this task, the shire horses remained employed for ceremonial and promotional purposes. However, due to rising costs associated with their upkeep, the Danish owners of Tetleys made the difficult decision to retire these beloved animals in August 2006. The last team of shire horses that pulled drays found solace and a well-deserved retirement at Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth. This photograph encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also represents an era when horse-drawn transportation was still prevalent within England's bustling cities. Walters' expert composition showcases not just the magnificent creatures themselves but also highlights their surroundings - a picturesque avenue lined with trees and a man donning traditional attire including a bowler hat. The image evokes nostalgia for old-fashioned charm while reminding us of our rich industrial heritage and how it has evolved over time.
