This stunning Square Shawl, also known as a Turnover Shawl, dates back to the early 19th century and hails from Paisley, Scotland. The intricate design of this shawl is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the time. The shawl is made of twill weaves, with 22 different z-twill patterns, creating a harlequin effect. The attached border consists of two layers of complementary warp and five color complementary weft twill weaves, self-patterned by the main warp floats. The shawl is adorned with beautiful floral motifs, embroidered with wool and silk in back satin and stem stitches, as well as fly satin and stem stitches. The main warp fringe adds an elegant touch to the piece. This shawl was not only a fashion statement but also a work of art, showcasing the rich heritage of textile design in Britain during the nineteenth century.
