Spanish Vessel arriving with Christmas Fruit, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Spanish Vessel arriving with Christmas Fruit, 1854. Sailing ship on the Thames, bringing produce for the London markets....The melons come from Spain, Portugal, and Holland. Spain is known to abound in melons...The largest foreign-fruit trade, however, by far, is that in oranges. We shall perhaps astonish our readers when we tell them that upwards of 60, 000, 000 are imported for the use of London alone, accompanied by not less than 15, 000, 000 lemons. Any time between December and May the orange clippers from the Azores and Lisbon maybe seen unloading their cargoes in the neighbourhood of the great stores in Pudding and Botolph Lanes. There are 240 of these fast sailing vessels engaged in the entire trade, and of this fleet seventy at least are employed in supplying the windows of the fruiterers and the apple-stalls of London'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Spanish Vessel arriving with Christmas Fruit, 1854," showcases a sailing ship gracefully navigating the River Thames in London, England, laden with an abundant cargo of exotic fruits from Spain and other European countries. The engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, depicts the vessel's sails billowing in the wind as it approaches the bustling port, ready to unload its valuable cargo. During the 19th century, the importation of citrus fruits, particularly oranges and lemons, was a significant industry in Europe. Spain, Portugal, and Holland were major producers, and London, with its vast consumer market, was a primary destination for these imports. The orange trade was particularly noteworthy, with over 60 million oranges and 15 million lemons being imported annually for the London market alone. The arrival of these fruit clippers from the Azores and Lisbon was a common sight on the Thames between December and May, as they unloaded their cargoes in the neighborhood of the great fruit stores in Pudding and Botolph Lanes. An impressive 240 of these fast-sailing vessels were engaged in the entire trade, with at least 70 of them supplying the fruit markets and apple stalls of London. This engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the economic and industrial activity of the 19th century, as well as the importance of water transport in the global trade of perishable goods. The melons, oranges, and lemons brought from these countries not only provided essential nutrients, such as vitamin C, but also added a burst of exotic flavor to the British diet. This image serves as a reminder of the rich history of international trade and the role it played in shaping the culinary landscape of Europe.
