EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sir Walter Raleigh, a prominent figure in British history. The portrait, taken in 1588 and reproduced in 1904 by Goupil & Co. , captures the essence of this influential man. Raleigh was highly regarded by Queen Elizabeth I, who bestowed upon him the honor of knighthood in 1585. Known for his adventurous spirit, Raleigh embarked on a daring mission to establish a colony in North America between 1584 and 1589. Although unsuccessful, he introduced two significant crops to Britain: tobacco and potatoes from the New World. However, his fortunes took a turn when James I ascended to the throne after Elizabeth's death. Accused of treason, Raleigh found himself imprisoned in the Tower of London and ultimately met his demise there in 1618. The National Portrait Gallery proudly houses this remarkable piece as part of its collection. Painted during an era characterized by naval warfare and exploration, it portrays Raleigh with striking detail - from his bearded countenance to his regal attire adorned with jewelry. Sir Walter Raleigh's direct gaze speaks volumes about his determination and resilience as he navigated through treacherous times. This black-and-white image evokes a sense of historical significance while capturing the essence of one man's extraordinary life journey.
