Shalford Mill, c1910, (1914). Artist: Jamess Ogilvy

Shalford Mill, c1910, (1914). Shalford Mill is an 18th-century watermill located on the River Tillingbourne in Shalford, near Guildford, Surrey. The Domesday Book records a mill being present on the site in 1086, one of the five mills recorded as part of the great manor of Bramley. In 1932 the mill was endowed to the National Trust by Fergusons Gang. Fergusons Gang formed in 1927, at Tothill Fields, London and was run by an anonymous board of women who raised funds for the National Trust from 1930-1947. The present timber framed building, built c1750 housed two separate mills. The eastern half of the mill ceased operation in the 19th century and was converted for residential use. The western half remained in operation until 1914 and is now open to the public. From A Pilgrimage In Surrey, Vol. 1, by James S. Ogilvy. [George Routledge & Sons Limited, London, 1914]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Shalford Mill, a picturesque 18th-century watermill nestled on the tranquil banks of the River Tillingbourne in Shalford, Surrey. Dating back to medieval times, this historic mill has been an integral part of the local landscape for centuries. Originally mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of five mills associated with Bramley Manor, Shalford Mill has witnessed countless generations pass by its sturdy walls. In 1932, it was generously bequeathed to the National Trust by Fergusons Gang – an extraordinary group of women who tirelessly fundraised for this noble cause from 1930 to 1947. The timber-framed structure that stands today was constructed around 1750 and once housed two separate mills. The eastern half eventually ceased operations and underwent conversion into residential quarters during the 19th century. However, the western half continued milling until its closure in 1914 and now welcomes visitors seeking a glimpse into its fascinating past. This remarkable photograph is part of "A Pilgrimage In Surrey". Volume One, captured by James S. Ogilvy and published by George Routledge & Sons Limited in London in 1914. Its timeless beauty transports us back to a simpler era when watermills were vital hubs of industry and community life along England's idyllic riversides.
