Savonnerie Panel: Autumn, c. 1717. Creator: Royal Savonnerie Manufactory, Chaillot Workshops
Savonnerie Panel: Autumn, c. 1717. Courtiers and aristocrats anxious to model their lifestyles on the king also commissioned works from the same state manufactories that produced tapestries, carpets, and upholstery for the French monarchy. Established in the early 1600s, the Savonnerie factory provided both domestic furnishings for the kings palaces and diplomatic gifts for foreign heads of state. The double coat of arms in this tapestry suggests that it was made fora count and countess who married in 1717. One of a group of four tapestries depicting the seasons, this work depicts the abundant flora and fauna of spring. The Cleveland Museum of Art rotates this tapestry with another from this group. The other two tapestries in the suite can be seen at the Toledo Museum of Art

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Savonnerie Panel: Autumn, created by the renowned Royal Savonnerie Manufactory in the Chaillot Workshops around 1717. In an era where courtiers and aristocrats sought to emulate the opulent lifestyle of the king, they commissioned works from state manufactories that produced luxurious tapestries, carpets, and upholstery for the French monarchy. The double coat of arms featured in this tapestry indicates that it was specially crafted for a count and countess who celebrated their union in 1717. Part of a series depicting each season, this particular artwork beautifully captures the abundant flora and fauna characteristic of autumn. The Cleveland Museum of Art proudly displays this remarkable piece alongside another tapestry from the same collection. The remaining two tapestries can be admired at the Toledo Museum of Art. Established during the early 1600s, the Savonnerie factory not only provided domestic furnishings for royal palaces but also served as a source for diplomatic gifts presented to foreign heads of state. This stunning carpet is a testament to their exceptional craftsmanship. With its intricate knotted pile made from silk and wool, this masterpiece exemplifies French heritage art at its finest. Heritage Images presents this print as a tribute to history's most esteemed artisans and invites viewers to appreciate their extraordinary talent through every thread woven into this magnificent work.
