Regent-Street - Marston Salt-Pit, 1850. Creator:s Read
Regent-Street - Marston Salt-Pit, [Cheshire], 1850. The gigantic columns of rock salt - with floor and roof of the same mineral - all glittered in the sudden light; and the shadows of the guests, preternaturally lengthened, fell behind them to the distance of twenty or thirty yards, and seemed to climb up the massive columns of salt, upon stilts which might have been used in Brobdignag...I could not help wishing that it had been possible to illuminate the cavern with gas, so that I might have been a witness of the scene. The miners did not happen to be at work on this particular day; but a few were procured from the neighbourhood, and came down by the bucket to show us the first process of the manufacture...Working in a salt mine is...infinitely preferable to working in a coal pit. There is no fear of explosion in a salt mine; the ventilation is good; the miner also can walk erect...'.. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Regent-Street - Marston Salt-Pit, Cheshire, 1850: A Journey into the Heart of the Salt Mine This evocative image, captured by S Read for the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of Marston Salt-Pit in Cheshire, England. The cavernous expanse of the salt mine, with its towering columns of translucent rock salt, shines in the sudden light, casting long, preternatural shadows on the walls. The scene is reminiscent of the fantastical landscapes of Gulliver's Travels, with the visitors appearing miniature against the massive mineral formations. The author of the accompanying text expresses his disappointment at not being able to witness the cavern illuminated by gas, as the miners were not at work that day. He describes the experience of working in a salt mine as infinitely preferable to working in a coal pit, with no fear of explosion, good ventilation, and the ability for miners to work upright. The image transports us back to the 19th century, offering a unique glimpse into the industrial processes of the time. The miners, procured from the neighborhood, are shown demonstrating the initial stages of the salt manufacturing process. The scene is a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of the people of the past, as they extracted natural resources from the earth to fuel the growing industrial revolution. This engraving is a reminder of the rich history and geographical features of Cheshire, England, and the unique tourist attractions that draw visitors from around the world. The salt mine at Marston, with its subterranean caverns and towering mineral formations, offers a glimpse into the past and a fascinating insight into the natural world.
