Parvati Nursing Ganesha, 19th century. Creator: Unknown
Parvati Nursing Ganesha, 19th century. India's multiple religious traditions produced lively exchanges in the representation of the divine. Here, the artist adapted Christian iconography of the Virgin and Child for a touching image of the Hindu goddess Parvati nursing her elephant-headed son Ganesha. According to one story, Parvati, wife of the god Shiva, desperately wanted a child and created a boy to guard her door while Shiva was away. Prevented from entering Parvati's room when he returned, Shiva became so enraged that he decapitated the boy. At Parvati's insistence, Shiva sent his servants to find the child a new head. They came back with the head of an elephant, and with it Ganesha was restored to life

EDITORS COMMENTS
Parvati Nursing Ganesha" is a captivating 19th century artwork from India that showcases the rich cultural exchanges between India's multiple religious traditions. In this painting, the artist creatively blends Christian iconography of the Virgin and Child with the Hindu mythology of Parvati and her elephant-headed son, Ganesha. Parvati, the consort of the god Shiva, is depicted in a tender moment as she nurses her beloved son, Ganesha. According to Hindu mythology, Parvati longed for a child and created Ganesha to guard her door while she bathed. Upon returning, an enraged Shiva, unaware of Parvati's deception, beheaded the boy. Devastated, Parvati requested that Shiva bring her son back to life. The gods then retrieved the head of an elephant, and with it, Ganesha was miraculously revived. This exquisite artwork, created in opaque watercolor with gold paint and copper and silver foil on paper, portrays Parvati in a cross-legged position, cradling Ganesha as she breastfeeds him. Ganesha, with his distinctive elephant head, sits contentedly on his mother's lap. Parvati's bare feet are adorned with henna and she wears intricate jewelry, adding to the richness of the artwork. This painting is a testament to the vibrant artistic heritage of India and the unique ways in which religious traditions influenced each other. It is a poignant reminder of the universal themes of motherhood, love, and the desire for life that transcend cultural boundaries. The artist's masterful use of color and posture, combined with the intricate details of the artwork, make "Parvati Nursing Ganesha" a stunning piece of art that continues to captivate viewers even today.
