He is the second son of the late Sir Edward O Brien, Baronet, of Dromoland, Clare; he was born in 1803. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of Mr. Smith O Brien, an influential Irish politician in 1844. Born in 1803, he was the second son of Sir Edward O Brien, Baronet, hailing from Dromoland, Clare. Initially representing the County of Limerick and serving as a magistrate on the commission of peace, his political stance shifted when he aligned himself with the Repeal agitation. As a fervent advocate for change, Mr. Smith O Brien fought passionately for two significant causes: the abolition of tithes and the introduction of ballot voting. However, his involvement in rebellious activities led to consequences that saw him being superseded along with other gentlemen associated with this movement. The once prominent figure's absence is now felt in parliamentary debates as his name no longer graces those discussions. Instead, one must turn to Irish correspondence within morning journals to seek traces of his influence. Captured by an unknown creator during this era marked by political unrest and rebellion in Ireland, this engraving showcases Mr. Smith O Brien's determined expression and resolute demeanor. It serves as a reminder not only of his individual significance but also reflects upon a turbulent period in British history where politicians like him played pivotal roles. Preserved through time by The Print Collector and made available through Heritage Images' collection, this historical artifact offers us a glimpse into Victorian Britain while shedding light on one man's pursuit for justice and reform amidst challenging circumstances.
