Mr. Arthur Mills, M.P. for Taunton, 1858....the moderate Conservative M.P. for Taunton, is a son of the Rev. F. Mills, of Barford, Warwickshire. He has just completed his forty-second year, and is married to a daughter of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, Bart. who for many years represented North Devon, until his retirement at the last general election. He was a pupil of the late Dr. Arnold at Rugby, and took his degree of B.A. at Balliol College, Oxford, in 1838, gaining classical honours. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in April, 1842. He was unsuccessful in 1847 in his first contest for the borough; was elected in 1852, but unseated shortly afterwards on petition. [Caption] This photograph print depicts Mr. Arthur Mills, the Conservative Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Taunton, in the year 1858. The identity of the creator of this image remains unknown. Mr. Mills was born to the Reverend F. Mills of Barford, Warwickshire, and had recently celebrated his forty-second birthday. He was married to a daughter of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, a former Member of Parliament for North Devon. Mills' educational background is impressive, having been a pupil of the renowned Dr. Arnold at Rugby School and earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Balliol College, Oxford, in 1838. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in April 1842. Mr. Mills' political career began in 1847 when he unsuccessfully contested the borough elections. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Taunton in 1852 but was unseated shortly afterwards due to a petition. He regained his seat in the March 1858 elections, defeating the Hon. W.F. Campbell. Mills' appearance in this photograph reveals a distinguished gentleman of the nineteenth century. His sideburns and facial hair were popular styles during this era.
