Moses Seymour, Jr. 1789. Creator: Ralph Earl (American, 1751-1801)
Moses Seymour, Jr. 1789. At the age of fifteen, Moses Seymour Jr. sat for a portrait that honors both its sitter and implicitly, his father, the former Revolutionary War major from Litchfield, Connecticut, who commissioned this work. Like so many American painters of his generation, Earl studied with Benjamin West in London. Upon his return, he practiced his profession in his native Connecticut River Valley. Seymours book and cane suggest that the young man reads and walks in harmony among natures beauties, an activity that recalls the ideals of the ancient Roman poet Horace. In a pose that presses him close to the foreground, however, this cultured figure also conveys a message about mans domination over nature. The painting remained in the sitters family until it was given to the museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the portrait of Moses Seymour Jr. , painted in 1789 by Ralph Earl, an esteemed American artist. At just fifteen years old, Moses sat for this remarkable piece that not only pays tribute to him but also implicitly honors his father, a former Revolutionary War major from Litchfield, Connecticut who commissioned the artwork. Earl was among many talented painters of his time who studied under Benjamin West in London before returning to practice his craft in the picturesque Connecticut River Valley. In this portrait, Moses is depicted holding a book and cane, symbolizing his love for literature and nature's beauty. This harmonious blend of reading and walking echoes the ideals championed by Horace, the ancient Roman poet. While positioned prominently in the foreground, Moses conveys a powerful message about mankind's dominion over nature. His cultured demeanor suggests that humans possess both intellectual prowess and physical control over their surroundings. Remarkably preserved within Moses' family until its recent donation to The Cleveland Museum of Art, this painting represents an invaluable piece of American heritage art from the late 18th century. With its rich oil on canvas technique and masterful execution by Ralph Earl - one of America's finest artists - it serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical significance.
