EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when Marco Polo embarked on his legendary journey from Venice in 1271. Accompanied by his father and uncle, Marco Polo set sail to explore the unknown lands of the East along the famous Silk Road. The image showcases a beautifully illuminated manuscript from the late 15th century, preserved in the esteemed Bodleian Library at Oxford. As we gaze upon this scene, we are transported back in time to witness one of history's greatest expeditions unfold. The ship gracefully glides through Venetian waters, ready to embark on an adventure that would span several years and lead Marco Polo all the way to China. The composition is rich with symbolism and detail: a majestic cathedral stands tall in the background, representing faith and spirituality amidst a world of exploration; elegant swans glide across tranquil waters, symbolizing grace and beauty; while birds soar freely above as if mirroring Marco Polo's desire for discovery. Marco Polo's remarkable tale unfolds before our eyes - his encounters with Kublai Khan, his immersion into Chinese culture for seventeen years, and ultimately his return home to Italy where he faced imprisonment but managed to pen down his extraordinary experiences in "Il Milione". This print not only serves as a visual reminder of Marco Polo's courageous spirit but also highlights how exploration can transcend borders and inspire generations throughout history.
