EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment in history - the arrival of the Shoreditch contingent at Hyde Park during the Means Test protests in London, 1932. The image is part of "The Pageant of the Century" collection published by Odhams Press Ltd in 1933. During this time, Britain was grappling with severe economic challenges brought on by the Great Depression. With unemployment rates soaring to 2,750,000, the National Unemployed Workers Movement organized a series of hunger marches across the country. The largest among them was held from September to October 1932 when marchers from South Wales Valleys, Scotland, and Northern England converged on Hyde Park. In this photograph, we see a sea of determined faces as men dressed in their Sunday best march through London's streets carrying banners and flags representing their trade unions. They are united against the Means Test - a controversial government policy that assessed individuals' eligibility for welfare benefits based on their income and assets. Amidst these brave protesters stands an unidentified police officer tasked with maintaining order amidst growing tensions. This image serves as a poignant reminder of social class divisions and widespread poverty that plagued British society during this era. The photographer behind this snapshot remains unknown but has left us with an enduring visual testament to an important chapter in our collective history.
