House in Pau, 1854. Creator: W. H. G. (French)

House in Pau, 1854. This large, richly toned print is an exceptional example of the artistic and technical abilities of an early amateur photographer, possibly French in nationality, known only as W.H.G. In 1854 this mysterious photographer worked for a limited time in Pau and the surrounding regions of the Pyrenees. Most of his or her 24 known compositions are architectural details or buildings sited in the landscape. In this example, instead of a traditional frontal view, the massive shape of the stately townhouse was documented at an oblique angle, which accentuates its volume and emphasizes the negative space created by the steep roofline against the sky. Yet the photographer also captured delicate details, like the patterns of shadow cast by the open shutters against the buildings walls. Clearly, W.H.G. understood the possibilities of the waxed paper negative, with its ability to render broad areas of light and shade, to suggest detail and texture, and to allow the viewers imagination to complete the picture

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "House in Pau, 1854" showcases the remarkable talent and technical prowess of an early amateur photographer known only as W. H. G. The photograph, possibly French in origin, is a testament to the artist's skill and creativity. In this particular composition, W. H. G. deviates from traditional frontal views by capturing the massive shape of a stately townhouse at an oblique angle. This unique perspective accentuates the building's volume and highlights the negative space created by its steep roofline against the sky. However, it is not just the grandeur of the structure that captivates viewers; delicate details such as patterns of shadow cast by open shutters against the walls add depth and intricacy to the image. W. H. G. 's mastery lies in their understanding of waxed paper negatives' potential. Through this medium, they expertly render broad areas of light and shade while suggesting detail and texture with finesse. By leaving certain elements to viewers' imagination, W. H. G. invites them to complete the picture themselves. This large-format print exemplifies one of 24 known compositions by W. H. G. , most featuring architectural details or buildings nestled within picturesque landscapes around Pau and its surrounding regions in Pyrenees during their limited time there in 1854. The House in Pau photograph stands as a testament to both artistic vision and technical proficiency – a true gem among early photography works.
