The Great Semmering Railway - the Bollerswand Viaduct and Tunnel, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Great Semmering Railway - the Bollerswand Viaduct and Tunnel, 1860. This is a great engineering work constructed through a mountain range to Styria, mainly by means of a series of viaducts and tunnels, and forming one of the links of the line between Vienna and Trieste. The distance over which this portion of the work runs is about seventy-three English miles, and is provided with seven stations. The gradients of the line are exceedingly steep...Crossing the viaduct of Karntnerkogel, the line plunges into a subterranean passage of the same name, and passing along the declivities of the Mortengraben hills, opposite to which runs the old post-road of Semmering, behind which rise the Schneeberg and Raxalpe hills, the station at Semmering is reached...So peculiar are the gradients of the line that locomotives of a special description have been constructed with a power of 1000 cwt. Austrian. The line has been constructed under the superintendence of Karl von Ghega, Inspector of Public Works'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable engineering feat of the 19th century: The Great Semmering Railway, specifically the Bollerswand Viaduct and Tunnel, constructed in 1860. The railway, which runs through the mountain range to Styria, is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. Spanning approximately seventy-three miles, this section of the line boasts seven stations and is renowned for its steep gradients. The railway's intricate design is evident in this image, as the line crosses the Karntnerkogel Viaduct, only to plunge into the subterranean passage of the same name. In the background, the Mortengraben hills and the old post-road of Semmering can be seen, with the Schneeberg and Raxalpe hills looming in the distance. The construction of this railway was no small feat, with gradients so steep that locomotives of a special description, boasting a power of 1000 cwt. Austrian, were required. This engineering marvel was overseen by Karl von Ghega, Inspector of Public Works, making it a true testament to the ingenuity and determination of the time. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1860, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the awe-inspiring achievements of the Victorian era and the remarkable impact they had on transportation and engineering.
