EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from the front cover of The Graphic, an illustrated weekly newspaper, published on March 20th, 1886. The photograph, titled "With Lord Dufferin in Burma," depicts an event from the British colonial expedition to Burma, now known as Myanmar, in Asia. Lord Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, is shown leading an advance guard search for dacoits, or bandits, along the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River. Dressed in military attire and seated in a small boat, Lord Dufferin, a prominent British statesman and diplomat, scans the riverbanks with a keen eye. His armed forces, consisting of soldiers and native policemen, are shown in the background, scouring the area for any signs of criminal activity. The British Empire's expansion into Burma was a significant event in the 19th century, marked by military conquests and the establishment of colonial rule. This photograph offers a glimpse into the colonial expedition, highlighting the strategic efforts to maintain law and order in the newly acquired territory. The black and white engraving, taken from The Graphic, Volume 33, January to June, 1886, is a testament to the historical significance of this period in Burmese and British history. The image is a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between Britain and its colonies, as well as the role of armed forces in shaping global power dynamics during the colonial era.
