Fudo Myoo, also known as Acala or Fudō Myōō, is a powerful and wrathful form of the Buddha, revered in East Asian Buddhism for his ability to vanquish evil and protect the Dharma. This exquisite 12th century sculpture, believed to have originated in Japan during the Heian period, showcases Fudo Myoo in a determined and resolute stance, clad in armor and adorned with a helmet. The intricately carved wood with traces of pigment depicts the deity's fierce countenance, with piercing eyes and a furrowed brow, as he clutches a vajra in his right hand and a rope noose in his left. Fudo Myoo's iconography is rooted in the Indian Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, who is often depicted with a thousand arms and eleven heads. However, in East Asian Buddhism, Fudo Myoo came to be associated with the wrathful aspect of Avalokitesvara, embodying the fierce determination needed to combat evil and protect the teachings of the Buddha.
