The dream of Zulaykha, from the Amber Album, c. 1670. Creator: Unknown

The dream of Zulaykha, from the Amber Album, c. 1670. In Islamic texts, as in the Hebrew and Christian Old Testament traditions, Zulaykha is the unnamed wife of Potiphar, a wealthy Egyptian. This scene is from a popular Persian poem that recounts the story of Joseph and Zulaykha as a mystical romance, and describes her visionary dreams of a beautiful lover. In this painting we see the luxuriously dressed Zulaykha asleep on a terrace, reclining on ornate pillows as a vision of her love, Joseph, appears before her. He is illuminated by radiant light cast down by angels emerging from the dark night clouds

The Dream of Zulaykha - A Mystical Romance Unveiled

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment of enchantment from the Amber Album, dating back to 1670. In this mesmerizing scene, we witness the dream of Zulaykha, an unnamed wife in Egyptian history and Islamic texts. However, it is through the lens of Persian poetry that her story unfolds as a mystical romance. The painting portrays Zulaykha in opulent attire, peacefully asleep on a terrace adorned with ornate pillows. As she slumbers, her visionary dreams manifest before her eyes. Joseph, her beloved and object of desire, materializes bathed in ethereal light emanating from celestial beings emerging through dark night clouds. Executed with meticulous detail using opaque watercolor and gold on paper by an unknown artist during India's Mughal era, this masterpiece exudes elegance and sophistication. The pink and blue borders embellished with golden foliate motifs add further allure to the composition. Preserved within the esteemed collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this painting invites us into a world where love transcends boundaries and imagination intertwines with reality. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to transport us beyond time and culture. Through Heritage Art/Heritage Images' expert craftsmanship in reproducing this historical gem as a photo print, viewers can now bring home their own piece of artistic wonderment – an exquisite reminder that even dreams can be immortalized on canvas
