The Clove - A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains, 1851. Creator: Jasper F. Cropsey (American
The Clove - A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains, 1851. In this dramatic portrayal of the American wilderness, wind and rain ravage the landscape as lightning flashes in the distance. Cropseys dark colours and roughly handled paint create an ominous tone which emphasizes the overwhelming power of the storm. At the right, an Indian hunter crouches beside a tree and watches helplessly as the stag he just shot tumbles over the waterfall, reinforcing the theme of natures superiority over man. The artist was a devout follower of Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole, whose poem " Storm in the Catskills" is believed to have inspired this painting. While often criticized for copying Coles style, Cropsey chose to render a close-up view of this scene, a departure from Coles more distant, romantic vistas. Cropseys familiarity with Frederic Churchs landscapes is also evident here; notice the similarity between the splintered tree in the foreground and Churchs Storm in the Mountains (1969.52; also in this gallery)

The Clove - A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains, 1851
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers to the heart of an intense storm in the American wilderness. Created by Jasper F. Cropsey, this artwork showcases his mastery of dark colors and rough brushstrokes to convey an ominous tone and highlight the immense power of nature. In this dramatic portrayal, wind and rain relentlessly ravage the landscape while lightning illuminates the distant horizon. The artist's close-up perspective allows us to immerse ourselves fully in the scene, feeling as though we are standing alongside an Indian hunter who helplessly watches his recently shot stag tumble over a waterfall. This poignant moment reinforces nature's dominance over mankind. Cropsey was deeply influenced by Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School art movement. It is believed that Cole's poem "Storm in the Catskills" inspired this painting, although Cropsey adds his own unique touch by deviating from Cole's more romanticized vistas. The artist also demonstrates familiarity with Frederic Church's landscapes through subtle details such as a splintered tree in the foreground reminiscent of Church's work "Storm in the Mountains". These connections between artists within their shared natural subject matter showcase their collective appreciation for America's awe-inspiring scenery. "The Clove - A Storm Scene in the Catskill Mountains, 1851" stands as a testament to both Cropsey's artistic talent and his reverence for nature’s overwhelming force.
