Bonaparte Closing The Pantheon Club, 1796, (1896). French revolutionary political club, its official name was Union of Friends of the Republic (Reunion des Amis de la Republique). Typogravure after the aquarelle by F De Myrbach, from data furnished to the artist by Frederic Masson. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume I, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in French history - "Bonaparte Closing The Pantheon Club, 1796". The Pantheon Club, also known as the Union of Friends of the Republic, was a revolutionary political club during the French Revolution. However, concerns over its potential to disrupt law and order led to its dissolution by the Directory. In this image, General Bonaparte can be seen carrying out the orders to close down the club on February 27th, 1796. As commander of the Army of the Interior at that time, he was tasked with maintaining public order. The typogravure reproduction is based on an original watercolor painting by F De Myrbach. The photograph provides a glimpse into this pivotal moment in history when France was undergoing immense political turmoil. Napoleon Bonaparte's role as both a general and later as Emperor is well-documented here. This image serves as a reminder of his influence during this period. Captured in monochrome tones, it adds an air of authenticity and nostalgia to the scene. It offers viewers a window into eighteenth-century France and allows them to reflect upon one man's impact on an entire nation. This historical print from "Life of Napoleon Bonaparte" by William Milligan Sloane holds great value for those interested in French politics, revolutionaries like Bonaparte himself or anyone fascinated by this transformative era in European history.
