EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned American actress, Billie Burke, during her prime years from 1903 to 1919. Born Mary William Ethelbert Appleton Burke in 1884, she embarked on her stage career in London before returning to the United States and achieving stardom in Broadway musical comedies. In a moment of serenity captured by the lens, Billie Burke leans against a mantelpiece adorned with an elegant mirror in a beautifully decorated room. Known for her preference for speaking roles on stage rather than silent films, Burke made her film debut in 1916 but later focused primarily on theater performances. However, she gracefully returned to the silver screen during the 1930s and left an indelible mark as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, in "The Wizard of Oz" released in 1939. In addition to her illustrious acting career, this portrait also highlights another significant aspect of Billie Burke's life - her marriage to Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfeld. Their union took place in 1914 and undoubtedly influenced both their personal lives and professional endeavors. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, this postcard-sized print is not only a testament to Billie Burke's talent but also serves as a visual reminder of early twentieth-century entertainment culture. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back into an era where theater was at its zenith and actresses like Billie Burke graced stages with their charm and charisma.
