EDITORS COMMENTS
Perino del Vaga's masterpiece, "Alexander Consecrating the Altars for the Twelve Olympian Gods," dates back to the 16th century and is a stunning depiction of Alexander III of Macedonia, also known as Alexander the Great, performing the sacred rite of consecration for the altars of the Twelve Olympian Gods. This pen and brown ink drawing with gray wash over black chalk on laid paper, created between 1545 and 1547, showcases the Macedonian monarch in the midst of an important cultural and historical moment. Alexander is depicted in regal attire, laying down the altars before the gods, surrounded by figures of Olympia and the Olympian gods. The drawing is a prime example of the Mannerist style, characterized by elongated figures, complex compositions, and a focus on emotion and movement. Piero Buonaccorsi, also known as Pietro Buonaccorsi, was a prominent Italian artist who influenced the development of this artistic movement. The drawing is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Italy and the importance of ancient Greek culture in the Renaissance period. It is a concept that continues to captivate audiences and inspire artists to this day. This work of art is now part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it is exhibited for the public to appreciate and learn from the historical and artistic significance of this magnificent drawing.
