In this historic image, Henri duc d'Anjou, later known as Henri III of France, is depicted during his reluctant journey to Krakow, Poland, after being elected as their new king in May 1573. The journey from Paris to Krakow proved to be a long and arduous one, taking Henri an astonishing five months to complete. Henri, who was then 22 years old, was the younger brother of King Charles IX of France. He was elected King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania following the death of Sigismund II Augustus, who had no direct heir. However, Henri was hesitant to accept the offer, as he had no personal connection to Poland and was content with his life in France. Despite his reluctance, Henri was eventually persuaded to make the journey to Krakow to take up his new role. The long and difficult journey involved traveling through unfamiliar territory, crossing rivers, and navigating treacherous mountain passes. The image captures the weariness and determination on Henri's face as he makes his way through the Polish countryside. Once he arrived in Krakow, Henri's reign was short-lived, lasting only one year. He faced numerous challenges during his time in Poland, including opposition from the Polish nobility and the ongoing threat of invasions from neighboring countries.
