EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting depicts King Henry VII of England, the founding monarch of the Tudor dynasty, in the year of his election as king in 1485 and his subsequent coronation in 1486. Born in 1457 as Henry Tudor, he spent most of his early life in exile in Brittany and France, waiting for an opportunity to claim the English throne. Henry's claim to the throne came in the form of the mysterious disappearance of the Princes in the Tower, the presumed heirs to the throne, Edward V and Richard Duke of York, in 1483. Henry seized the moment and landed in Wales in August 1485 with a small army. The decisive Battle of Bosworth Field took place on August 21, 1485, in which Henry's forces defeated those of Richard III, the last Plantagenet king. The miniature painting captures Henry VII in his regal attire, wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a jeweled crown. His expression is steady and resolute, reflecting the determination and strength of character that helped him secure his claim to the throne and establish the Tudor dynasty. The intricate details of the painting, from the delicate folds of his robe to the meticulously rendered jewels and embroidery, attest to the exceptional skill of the artist. Henry VII's reign marked the end of the Wars of the Roses and the beginning of a new era in English history. He was a shrewd and pragmatic ruler who sought to unite the country and restore stability after years of civil strife. His marriage to Elizabeth of York, the daughter of the late Edward IV, further solidified his claim to the throne and brought the houses of Lancaster and York together. This magnificent miniature painting is a testament to the rich history and artistic achievements of the Tudor period and offers a glimpse into the life and reign of one of England's most significant monarchs.
