Henry, born in 1387, was the third surviving son of King Henry IV and succeeded to the throne following the death of his elder brother, Prince Henry of Monmouth, in 1413. At the time of this portrait, Henry was in his early thirties, and his reign was still in its infancy. Yet, despite his youth, he proved to be a dynamic and capable leader, leading England through a period of political instability and military conflict. The portrait shows Henry in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered robe and a crown adorned with precious stones. His expression is serious and resolute, reflecting the weight of responsibility that rested on his shoulders. His posture is confident and commanding, with one hand resting on a scepter and the other holding a globe, symbolizing his role as ruler of an empire. Henry V is best known for his military victories, particularly his successful invasion of France in 1415, which culminated in the Battle of Agincourt. This victory not only secured England's position in Europe but also solidified Henry's reputation as a great military leader. Despite his successes, Henry's reign was not without challenges.
