EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in French history: the Henry-Picquart duel of 1898, which unfolded against the backdrop of the contentious Dreyfus Affair. Colonel Georges Picquart (left), a dedicated and principled military officer, stands resolute as he faces off against Colonel Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy's superior, Colonel Alfred Henry (right). The duel was a result of Picquart's unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth in the Dreyfus case, a military espionage scandal that had divided France. The Dreyfus Affair began in 1894 when Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish artillery captain, was wrongfully convicted of treason. The evidence against him was later proven to be fabricated, but the verdict stood due to deep-seated anti-Semitic sentiments and political maneuvering. Picquart, who was in charge of the investigation into the case, discovered that the forged documents had originated from Esterhazy. However, when Picquart presented his findings to his superiors, he was met with disbelief and hostility. In an attempt to silence Picquart, Henry, the commander of the military school at Châlons, challenged him to a duel. The duel was a deeply regrettable escalation of the situation, and it took place on March 9, 1898, in the forest of Montjouvain. This photograph, taken during or shortly after the duel, shows the two colonels in a tense standoff, their swords crossed, symbolizing the deep divisions and animosities that had taken root in French society. The Henry-Picquart duel further fueled public outrage and galvanized support for Dreyfus's cause. Eventually, in 1899, Dreyfus was exonerated and his conviction was overturned. The Dreyfus Affair marked a turning point in French history, leading to the dismantling of the old regime and the emergence of a more democratic and secular France.
