Hall of Private Audience, Fatehpur Sikri, India

Hall of Private Audience, Fatehpur Sikri, in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Fatehpur Sikri was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar beginning in 1570, in honour of Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti, who lived in a cavern on the ridge at Sikri, and foretold the birth of his son, who was named Prince Salim after him, and later succeeded Akbar to the throne of the Mughal Empire, as Jahangir. When Akbar became Emperor the Sufi Saint Shaikh Salim Chisti decided to leave as he realised that people would ahve to be killed for reasons of State and that it was unsuitable for him to be associated with these killings. Akbar was distraught. This room was constructed in order to fulfill Akbars wish that people of different religious belief could be invited to debate with one another openly as to the truth of their beliefs. Originally there were curtains on the upper balcony, which allowed Akbar to listen in incognito to these debates. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Hall of Private Audience, a historic edifice nestled within the enchanting ruins of Fatehpur Sikri in India. Established during the late 16th century by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, this architectural marvel was constructed as a tribute to Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti, who had foretold the birth of Akbar's son, Prince Salim, who later became Emperor Jahangir. As Akbar ascended the throne, Shaikh Salim Chisti chose to leave, recognizing the inevitable reality of state-sanctioned violence. Akbar was deeply saddened by his departure and sought a means to continue the saint's message of interfaith dialogue and unity. In response, the Hall of Private Audience was erected as a platform for people of diverse religious beliefs to engage in open debates. Originally, the upper balcony was adorned with curtains, allowing Akbar to listen in secret to these intellectual exchanges. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, captures the essence of this remarkable space, which stands as a testament to Akbar's vision of fostering harmony and understanding between various faiths. Fatehpur Sikri, situated in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, India, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing visitors from around the world to explore its rich history and architectural wonders. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to reflect on the importance of dialogue and understanding in fostering a more peaceful and inclusive world.
